Community Star winners are awarded in three categories: business star, collaborative star, and rising star. You can either be nominated or self-apply. Complete the nomination formbefore August 1, 2019.
DHEC’s Office of Environmental Affairs recently presented Community Star Awards to the 2018 award winners. Awarded annually, Community Star recognizes a business, community organization, collaborative partnership, or individual in South Carolina that is going above and beyond environmental requirements to build better community relationships, promote environmental sustainability and resiliency, and/or improve quality of life for communities.
Santee Cooper was awarded the Business Community Star for their strong community presence and a proven track record of environmental excellence. They have several initiatives that have involved the community including the Camp Hall Commerce Park, the Give Oil for Energy Recovery (GOFER) project, and several educational initiatives. Santee Cooper engages citizens and communities throughout the state to promote environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Brandon Burke, a former restaurant general manager in the Charleston area, was awarded the Rising Star Community Star Award for his work with families in the surrounding community who were faced with children with cancer. All of these efforts were taking place while his own son was battling cancer.

COMMUNITY STAR categories include Business Star, Collaborative Star and Rising Star. Award recipients will be announced at DHEC’s annual Environmental Assistance Conference, which will be held later in the fall. Last year’s COMMUNITY STAR was awarded to the Lower Saluda River Coalition, which works to make water quality information more frequently and readily available to river users so they can make informed decisions on when to recreate in the river.
On November 8, 2017, DHEC’s Office of Environmental Affairs held its annual Environmental Assistance Conference — DHEC and Industry: Going Beyond the Fenceline Together. There were over 200 attendees and 17 vendors present. DHEC’s Environmental Affairs bureaus also set up their own tables.
Myra Reece, Director of Environmental Affairs, announced DHEC’s newest awards recognition program and presented the first Community Star Award. This brand-new award recognizes a business, community organization, collaborative partnership, or individual in our state that is going above and beyond environmental requirements to build better community relationships, promote environmental sustainability and resiliency, and/or improve quality of life for communities.
While this is the first award, it is not the last. The Community Star Award will be awarded annually at the Environmental Assistance Conference. Those interested can nominate themselves or others.
