Find Healthcare Services with DHEC’s “Find a Facility” Interactive Map

The start of a new year brings New Year’s resolutions, many of which are related to improving our health. Let DHEC help you find the healthcare facilities that can assist you with your resolutions by using our Find a Facility interactive map.

Accessible on any Internet-connected device, Find a Facility is an interactive map identifying all DHEC-licensed healthcare facilities. The map allows users to search for specific facilities or filter facility types based on the user’s preferences.

  • Body Piercing Facilities
  • Community Residential Care Facilities

Find a Facility is a public-use, interactive map and database, developed as a result of joint efforts between DHEC’s Health Regulations and GIS teams.

“This free application allows us to share our resources with the community at large,” said Veronica Moore, GIS program manager. “We encourage healthcare facilities, medical professionals and the general public to take advantage of the application and the valuable data it offers.”

Use the Farmers and Roadside Market App This Summer for Local Fresh Produce Purchases at 356 Markets and Stands

Summer is in full swing.  Now is the time to take advantage of our state’s fresh produce by using the S.C. Farmers and Roadside Market App.  The web-based app shows the location, hours of operation and accepted payment types for hundreds of statewide farmers markets and roadside produce stands.

Payment types may include:  cash, credit cards, WIC, SNAP, and senior vouchers.

Approximately 356 markets and stands are on the app statewide.  In addition to giving locations and hours of markets and stands, the app also provides healthy recipes featuring in-season produce each month.

“The app makes it easy to find local, affordable options for fresh produce, which can empower families to make healthier food choices,” said Nick Davidson, DHEC interim director of Public Health.

Seasonal programs are also making local produce more affordable in various parts of the state.  DHEC’s WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides WIC participants with checks that can be used to buy approved fresh produce at authorized farmers markets and roadside stands.

DHEC’s Division of Enterprise Applications, led by GIS Section Manager Philip Weinbach, was recently recognized at The Public Technology Institute (PTI) Smart Cities and Counties Summit with a 2015 PTI GIS Vision Award.  A geographic information system (GIS) helps individuals visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends. This prestigious, annual award is presented to outstanding individuals from within local and state government who have demonstrated a leadership role in GIS tools and sharing of GIS data across boundaries.

According to PTI Executive Director Alan Shark, “DHEC, along with the other award recipients, understand how to better serve and protect the public, and to enhance real-time decision-making through the use of GIS tools and data.  Individuals who are recognized as GIS Vision Award recipients have contributed to advancing enterprise-wide GIS, articulated a clear vision and recognized innovation, demonstrated leadership, and served as a champion for the use of GIS across and within the city, county and state.  I congratulate you for your leadership and for your vision!”

DHEC has also been selected to receive a Special Achievement in GIS award at the 2015 Esri User Conference.  Esri inspires and enables people to positively impact the future through a deeper, geographic understanding of the changing world around them.  The Special Achievement in GIS award is given to user sites around the world to recognize outstanding work with GIS technology.  DHEC stood out from more than 100,000 others in receiving this award.

The GIS Section at DHEC has made great strides in developing many publicly available applications using the JavaScript programming language.  These applications are mobile ready and work across platforms, iOS and Android.  The team has worked closely with program areas to add interactive mapping to our website, which includes topics such as air monitoring, permits and planning, public health, water resources, and much more.

Congratulations to our entire GIS team for these outstanding accomplishments!
