DHEC Highlights Support of Vulnerable Population for Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, an annual observance that serves as an opportunity to spread the word about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. As the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease increases, so does the need for safe and reliable care for those living with the disease.

DHEC Reminds Everyone of Danger Hot Cars Pose to Children

DHEC’s Division of Injury and Substance Abuse Prevention (DISAP) wants to remind everyone of the dangers of pediatric vehicular heatstroke, commonly referred to as “hot car deaths.” Heatstroke can occur throughout the year as temperatures inside a vehicle can reach life threatening levels even on mild or cloudy days. 

Children are particularly vulnerable to hot car deaths as their bodies’ ability to maintain internal body temperatures are not as efficient as an adult’s and their body temperature warms at a rate of 3 or 5 times faster than adults, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
