DHEC Marks Fire Prevention Week with Fire Safety Skills and Tips

It’s Fire Prevention Week! The 2023 theme is Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.™

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries in the United States. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.

According to the South Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal, there have been five fatal cooking-related fires in the state so far in 2023, resulting in eight lives lost. Those stats are among a total of 57 fatal fires of all causes, which have claimed 68 lives, throughout the state this year.

The good news is that most cooking fires and burns are preventable.
